Concurrent Validity of a Tri-axial Accelerometer for Measures of Gait Variability

چکیده
INTRODUCTION Accelerometers are becoming an increasingly important tool in the study of human movement. Their ease and affordability, combined with the potential to collect large amounts of continuous data outside the laboratory setting makes them excellent tools for gait analysis. Research has demonstrated the effectiveness of a single tri-axial accelerometer in measuring mean spatiotemporal parameters of gait, but there is limited information on their ability to assess measures of gait variability [1]. While the clinical applications of gait variability are not yet fully understood, these measures are believed to be critical in understanding the motor control of gait [2]. Therefore, it is necessary to establish an effective method to measure gait variability with the tri-axial accelerometer for future gait analysis applications. The purpose of this study was to assess the concurrent validity of a tri-axial accelerometer in measuring mean spatiotemporal gait parameters and their variability, compared to a criterion footswitch device.

Test-Retest Reliability and Concurrent Validity of a Single Tri-Axial Accelerometer-Based Gait Analysis in Older Adults with Normal Cognition
OBJECTIVE We investigated the concurrent validity and test-retest reliability of spatio-temporal gait parameters measured with a single tri-axial accelerometer (TAA), determined the optimal number of steps required for obtaining acceptable levels of reliability, and compared the validity and reliability of the estimated gait parameters across the three reference axes of the TAA. METHODS A tot...

Smartphones are very common devices in daily life that have a built-in tri-axial accelerometer. Similar to previously developed accelerometers, smartphones can be used to assess gait patterns. However, few gait analyses have been performed using smartphones, and their reliability and validity have not been evaluated yet. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the reliability and validity of ...
متن کاملReliability and validity of an accelerometry based measure of static and dynamic postural stability in healthy and active individuals.
Postural stability is an important measure in both research and clinical practice. A portable, easy to use device that can provide higher resolution than current clinical tests may allow for better identification of patients or athletes with postural stability deficits. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ability of a tri-axial accelerometer to quantify postural stability in a healthy...
متن کاملA Validated Smartphone-Based Assessment of Gait and Gait Variability in Parkinson’s Disease
BACKGROUND A well-established connection exists between increased gait variability and greater fall likelihood in Parkinson's disease (PD); however, a portable, validated means of quantifying gait variability (and testing the efficacy of any intervention) remains lacking. Furthermore, although rhythmic auditory cueing continues to receive attention as a promising gait therapy for PD, its widesp...
متن کاملToward ambulatory balance assessment: estimating variability and stability from short bouts of gait.
Stride-to-stride variability and local dynamic stability of gait kinematics are promising measures to identify individuals at increased risk of falling. This study aimed to explore the feasibility of using these metrics in clinical practice and ambulatory assessment, where only a small number of consecutive strides are available. The concurrent validity and reliability were assessed compared to...
